#Coronavirus: Farm workers want PPEs | News Article

Some farm workers between Ottosdal and Delareyville in North West are allegedly reporting for duty without the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) from employers.

This, despite Covid19 regulations that require one to be protected from contracting the virus.

One employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, told OFM news no sanitisers, gloves or masks were given to them. He says they sometimes have to work in environments that don't have running water.

North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development spokesperson, Emelda Setlhako, says the department will provide aid to farmers where necessary, adding workers are advised to adhere to safety guidelines at all times.

Spokesperson for the provincial Health Department, Tebogo Lekgethwane, said regular hand washing is important and that social distancing should be practiced.

He adds gloves can also attract the virus if one uses them for a long time; hence he encourages regular hand wash or sanitising.

OFM News also spoke to Cosatu's secretary in the province, Kopana Konopi, who are also stressed that running water and soap is a necessity and that workers should wash hands regularly.
