#SADrought: Relief programme heads to NC | News Article

Drought-stricken Northern Cape farmers and community members might soon breathe a sigh of relief as the disaster relief organisation, the Gift of the Givers, and private companies lend a helping hand.

The province has for years been hard hit by drought, leading to the death of many animals, communities in dire straits and devastation to agricultural land. It is estimated that the drought experienced in the province has led to more than 62 000 job losses within various parts of the agricultural production chain. Agri Northern Cape has stated that farmers in the province are under severe pressure and in need of much help. Shoprite Group’s CSI Manager, Lunga Schoeman, tells OFM News in support of the drought-relief efforts in the Northern Cape and the Eastern Cape, they will be heading to Kimberley tomorrow where they will be handing over animal feed and groceries to communities.

The government has so far allocated R30 million for fodder to help farming communities in the Northern Cape.

Deputy President David Mabuza has, during his visit to the Namakwa District last month, stated that apart from the R30 million that has been reprioritised by the government for fodder, they are committing to provide assistance to the provincial government for the production of fodder.
