North West police spokesperson, Adèle Myburgh, reveals the deceased is the girlfriend of the older of the two brothers. According to Myburgh, the brothers, aged 30 and 38, were travelling in a Volkswagen Polo Vivo and spotted by police patrolling the industrial area close to the Ikageng township on Monday night. The elder brother lives in this township.

A car chase ensued after the authorities attempted to stop the vehicle in Jeppe Street. The chase came to an end under a tree in Opaal Street, where the car was found with the occupants present. A woman’s body was discovered in the vehicle and the brothers were arrested. They remain in police custody and will appear in the Local Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The World Health Organisation reveals, that more than 35% of all murders of women globally are reported to be committed by an intimate partner. This has caused alarm globally and especially in South Africa where the issue of gender-based violence has sparked countrywide protests in the wake of high-profile murders.
