Despite a court having set aside planned water restrictions, a large part of Bloemfontein is without water.

DA Councillor in the Mangaung Metro, Rossouw Botes, tells OFM News this is due to a problem with a transformer at the Welbedacht Dam and that there was allegedly also a delay with the pumping of water to Brand mop reservoir, which affects a number of areas in Bloemfontein.

The case between Mangaung Metro Municipality and its water board will again be heard in the Free State High Court on October 31, after the court ruled that Bloem Water cannot implement its planned water restriction to the municipality and that the metro will have to pay its debt. The water board had long announced water restrictions to the municipality due to non-payment and said they would only supply the municipality with 30% of its bulk water supply.

The financial state of the municipality earlier this week came under scrutiny during the National Council of Province’s sitting in the Legislature where they were briefed by Treasury MEC, Gadija Brown, on the overall performances of municipalities in the Free State.

Tabling her report, Brown painted a bleak picture on the state of all municipalities in the province. She highlighted that the majority of them are still battling to generate income or pay their service providers, which in turn affects service delivery.

Her 68-page report indicated that municipalities in the province collectively now owes Eskom R9.8 billion and water boards R3.8 billion.
