NSPCA and AfriForum takes on Modise for alleged animal abuse | News Article

The case of alleged animal abuse involving the Chairperson of the National Council op Provinces, Thandi Modise, in North West, is one of the most dire cases of animal cruelty that the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA)

The NSPCA is now set to privately prosecute. Executive Director of the NSPCA, Marcelle Meredith, says 162 starving animals were left to fend for themselves and eventually had to be euthanized on Modise's farm  near Potchefstroom.

The NSPCA visited the farm after receiving a complaint in July 2014. Meredith says the carcasses of over 50 pigs were littered across the farm. Carcasses of geese, ducks, sheep and goats were also found. The surviving animals were left without food and water and were in a state of desperation. According to her the situation, especially with the pigs on the farm, was appalling.

Meredith says this is why the NSPCA is grateful to AfriForum for providing the head of its Private Prosecution Unit, Gerrie Nel's, services, to launch and preside over privately prosecuting Modise. She says the NSPCA can in terms of the Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1993 prosecute offenders privately.

Meanwhile the National Council of Provinces Chairperson , Thandi Modise, has noted the announcement by AfriForum and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA)'s plans to pursue private prosecution against her.

In the release, Modise says it is important to note that the National Prosecuting Authority had abandoned its case, citing absence of prospects for successful prosecution. This is because Modise had delegated people she trusted to look after the farm while she is a way fulfilling her parliamentary responsibilities as head of the NCOP, in Cape Town. In the release it is stated that Modise, upon learning of the matter, swiftly intervened and put appropriate measures in place to address the situation.
