8 Years of One Direction and We Still Haven’t Moved On

8 Years of One Direction and We Still Haven’t Moved On | News Article

Name a more loyal fanbase than Directioners. I’ll wait.

A long, long time ago there was a boyband, you might have heard of them. If the name One Direction rings any bells then congratulations, you haven’t been living under a rock. Last night marked 8 years since that blessed day in 2010 when Simon Cowell changed the lives of millions of girls all over the world.

The five members of One Direction caused happiness for their fans but these past 8 years have not been without its conflicts. There was that time that they didn’t win X-Factor, and when Harry dated a woman twice his age, and let us not forget, when Zayn left the band with no warning. Honestly, being a One Direction fan was a stressful business but those 5 clumsy yet incredibly talented boys made these past 8 years worth it.

Of course, fans took to Twitter to share their emotions. If you scroll through the #8YearsOfOneDirection hashtag you can find crying, screaming, anger, love, crying, laughing, and more crying.

As the day hurried along, fans anxiously waited for the boys to acknowledge the anniversary and slowly but surely the gave us what we wanted with the exception of Harry who waited until the absolute last moment effectively breaking every fans nostalgic heart.

Unsurprisingly, there was radio silence from Zayn.

The One Direction account took to twitter as well and shared lyrics from old and new songs alike every hour. This sparked a conspiracy amongst fans that the single for One Directions last single, “Infinity”, would be released at midnight. Unfortunately, fans stayed up all night waiting for something, anything, to happen but were disappointed when the tweets stopped and they were given nothing to work with.

I think I can speak for other fans when I rant about how inconsiderate that is. As many know, One Direction has been on hiatus for two years no and every member has gone on to do their own solo projects. While fans continue to support their individual projects, nothing compares to the magic that happens when the boys are back together. Call me dramatic but I think it might compare to the stars aligning.

It takes a lot of passion and commitment to follow a band for 8 years. Considering the demographic of their fan base in the early days, most 1D fans are now in their early to mid-twenties. Call us ridiculous but holy crap, what a time to be alive. There is comfort in the wording of the members tweets when they use the word “of” rather than “since,” an indicator that One Direction is an entity that continues to exist. As long as that slight wording doesn’t change, we will continue to support these boys for many years to come.

Probably after too, who am I kidding?
