A Kimberley teen plans to take the wrestling world by storm with determination and passion. Minette Kruger aims to make a name for herself internationally.

From the age of eleven, Minette’s (17) passion for wrestling has set her apart in this sports code. Her curiosity was sparked from watching her younger brother CW Kruger wrestle, and she rejected the idea of the sport only being for men.

She would also like to inspire younger girls who want to join the wrestling space but regard it as a male-dominated sport, to inform them they can be like her when they grow up.

A few of Minette’s most recent achievements include winning a silver medal at the u.20 African Championships and a bronze medal at the Senior African Championships in Egypt on 18 and 19 March. She also ranks 19th in the world in her weight class (62kg) and is the youngest in this category.

Since starting the sport she has always felt supported by her fellow wrestlers. She regards them as family, even though it is a one-man sport. One thing Minette would like to change, if possible, would be to have wrestling as popular as rugby in the country.

She also said she feels cherished and loved by her community's support. “From them wishing me luck, getting more followers on social media, getting small donations from everyone, and them following up on all my achievements.”

Minette dreams of being at the 2028 Olympic Games, which is set to happen in Los Angeles.
