Kby parents urged to look after their kids | News Article

Kimberley - The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality in the Northern Cape has appealed to the community to ensure that they know the whereabouts of their children and forbid them from going to places where they might get hurt.

This comes after a twelve-year-old boy, Mlungisi Ranku drowned at the Galeshewe public swimming pool late yesterday afternoon. Municipal spokesperson, Sello Matsie says it is alleged that the boy was part of a group that sometimes jump over the fence to gain access to the swimming pool after closing hours.

“Unfortunately because at that time there was no supervision and the pool was closed to the public, we sustained a fatality and the body was retrieved by the forensic pathologists services in Kimberley. The matter is now up for police investigations”.

Matsie says the municipality has been concerned about the possibility of children jumping over the fence and the security personnel at the swimming pool have been ordered on numerous occasions to remove children after hours.

He says although the fencing is not easily accessible the best form of protection would be for parents to ensure that they know the whereabouts of their children at all times.

Matsie says the municipality will look at other ways of intensifying security measures around the swimming pool.

At this stage he can't say whether the municipality will assist the family with funeral arrangements.
