The North West province features premier wildlife destinations, among them the Pilanesberg Game Reserve and the Madikwe Game Reserve; parts of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites (the Vredefort Dome and the Taung Fossil Site).


1. Sun City

The Sun City resort is perhaps the biggest attraction in the North West. This entertainment and leisure resort provides a theme park for its visitors, golfing at the Gary Player Country Club as well as a variety of adventure sports and safari options.


 2. Hartbeespoort Dam

This popular weekend getaway offers a host of activities including boating, water sports, hikes, quad biking, trails and walks. Additional activities include hot-air ballooning, paragliding and hang gliding.

 

3. The Magalies Meander Arts and Craft Route

This route is littered with arts and craft centres, boutiques and art galleries. Located in the heart of the Magaliesberg Mountains, the Magalies Meander arts and crafts routes is any art lover's dream. The warm hospitality and the array of indigenous wild, bird and plant life provide make this an ideal relaxation destination.


4. Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Just two hours away from both Johannesburg and Pretoria lies the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Set in a volcanic crater, this is one of South Africa’s most popular wildlife areas. Visitors will be able to view the Big Five namely: elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino.


 5. Goudkoppie Heritage Hill

The landscape of this attraction is evidence of the Vredefort meteorite which hit Earth approximately 2 billion years ago. Visitors to the Goudkoppie Heritage Hill can expect to gain some insight into ancient South African geology, history and culture, with its links to gold, war and settlement.


 6. Blaauwbank Historic Gold Mine & Resort

Visitors of Blaauwbank Historic Gold Mine & Resort will be taken on a guided tour where old picks and shovels, coco pans and rope winches can be viewed. Additionally, mountain biking and hiking trails are available for the adventurous.

 

7. Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary

The Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary, about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, houses primates that were personal pets or in captivity. The 7ha sanctuary is one of only eight free-release primate sanctuaries in the world. A guided tour will see visitor's journey through the sanctuary and catch a glimpse of capuchins, lemurs, squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys and bushbabies.

 

8. The Taung Heritage Route

It was here that the 2.5-million-year-old fossilised skull of a hominid child was found in 1924 encased in limestone. Known as the Taung Skull, its discovery was one of the most significant scientific events as it provided evidence that human ancestors had lived on the continent more than a million years earlier than previously believed. Additionally visitors can take in wonders such as rock basins, streams, caves, a limestone waterfall and the Blue Pools


9. The Groot Marico

This area, also known as “Bosman Country” is a renowned cultural attraction. It is here that storyteller Herman Charles Bosman set most of his South African tales. The Herman Charles Bosman Festival, which takes place every October, is one of the areas main activities. The Groot Marico also offers the annual Marico Mountain Bike Classic as well as battlefield tours; hiking trails as well as a number of art and craft outlets.


10. Mphebatho Cultural Museum

The museum was established to preserve and showcase the culture and traditions of the Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela people. Visitors will gain insight into the ways of the Bakgatla through folklore, artefacts, photographs, pottery and traditional attire.
