The 20-year-old Auckland wicketkeeper, Glenn Phillips, has admitted that he was left shocked after receiving a call-up to represent the Black Caps in the one-off T20 International against South Africa.

The destructive opening batsman, Martin Guptill, was ruled out for the match as well as the first two One-Day Internationals against the Proteas after his hamstring niggle flared up again.

This prompted the selectors to call up the South African born player ahead of Ross Taylor.

The player becomes the latest of a growing list of players such as Grant Elliott, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling and Kruger van Wyk to represent their adopted country.

The player conceded that he doesn’t know too much about the Proteas.

“It is a bit of a coincidence that I’ll be debuting against my country of birth,” said Phillips.

“I’ve only played against them once for the under 19’s, other than that I don’t really have much of a clue about them.

“It’s good to go in with a little bit of an unknowingness.”

The Proteas have been warned that his teammates at Auckland have been comparing the player to the Black Caps great Brendan McCallum.

The player, who hails East London, added that he is happy with his form and wants to keep it as simple as possible.

“It’s feeling good. It’s all about keeping things as simple as possible, just watching the ball, seeing the seam and just backing my game as much as I can”.

Black Caps and Proteas lock horns in the one-off T20 International on Friday at Eden Park.
