FS municipality to resume refuse collection | News Article
Thabiso Tsoaeli,

In response to the huge challenges in waste management, Municipal Manager of the Matjhabeng municipality in the Free State, Thabiso Tsoaeli, said a refuse collection programme is underway to address challenges.

Tsoaeli stated that the municipality apologises to residents for the waste removal disruptions. He explained that the long-term plan of the municipality is to make use of internal resources to collect refuse from all six municipal towns and townships.

However, currently an interim waste management committee has been established and an additional five refuse trucks have been hired to curb the backlog, to ensure that the situation will be resolved and go back to normal as soon as possible.

Furthermore, residents are encouraged to use the allocated landfill sites to dispose of their waste and help the municipality by maintaining the cleanliness once these areas have been cleaned.

“Every effort is being made to ensure the safety of those using the landfill sites while law enforcement officials have also been tasked to issue tickets to those who dump waste illegally,” Mr Tsoaeli explained.

The community is urged to help the municipality to achieve a healthy and clean environment by helping to sustain the cleanliness in areas where cleaning has taken place, remembering that illegal dumping goes back to the environment and can cause illness for the very community it comes from.

Matjhabeng Municipality spokesperson, Kgojane Matutle, said that they appeal to residents to refrain from illegal dumping as our workers are busy working around the clock to attend to all affected areas and thank the community for their patience.
