Dean Burmester - Sunshine Tour

“He is in a good space and it's reflecting in his golf. As you well know, being from Bloemfontein, he one of the nicest pros you'll ever meet, one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He's highly competitive and loves to prove a point.”

The Valhalla Golf Course in Kentucky is expected to be well suited for Bloemfontein’s Dean Burmester during the 106th PGA Championship.

Burmester is renowned for his big drives and he has one of the longest averages in world golf. On top of that, he is oozing with confidence after being Sergio Garicia in a playoff to win his maiden LIV Miami title to pocket a whopping R75 million. That is more than what the world number one, Scott Scheffler, earned for winning last month’s Masters at Augusta in Georgia.

The 34-year-old is one of just five South Africans that will tee it up at the year’s second major and there is a sense that he will do well.

The renowned golf pundit and scribe, Michael Vlismas, told OFM Sport that Valhalla is tailor made for Burmester’s game.

“He is in a good space and it's reflecting in his golf. As you well know, being from Bloemfontein, he one of the nicest pros you'll ever meet, one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He's highly competitive and loves to prove a point.

“That was certainly the case when he came out here towards the end of the year and won the Joburg Open and the SA Open.

“For him, going back-to-back in those DP World Tour events in South Africa, it was a statement for him that he wanted to make and I wouldn't be surprised if he feels the same having gotten into this field that he's going to want to make it count.

“But yes, certainly in terms of the confidence and the gain, he's got it. And for a Valhalla course, it’s a long golf course and I think it could be suited to him.”

The other South Africans playing this week are Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Thriston Lawrence, Erik van Rooyen and the majors debutant, Ryan van Velzen.

Burmester will tee-off at 15:21 on Thursday afternoon, alongside the American duo of Benjamin Griffin and Andrew Svoboda.
